Roussillon 2006: Introduction

It was time for me to Revisit Roussillon.

Conseil Interprofessionnel Vins du RoussillonOf course, it is not truly feasible to revisit a wine region that I have never set foot in, but this was how the invitation was worded. I can, of course, revisit the Balmoral Hotel in Edinburgh where this grand gathering of Roussillon winemakers was to take place, having previously attended the annual Oddbins Wine Fair there a few years ago. That was a weekend I remember well; non-vintage Duval-Leroy with six months bottle age on the train journey northwards, a couple of nights in a saucy B&B at 4 Forres Street (no longer offering this service today - it is a day nursery apparently), and two days of weathering the storm of tipsy and plain drunk punters at the Balmoral Hotel. I'm glad to report that no such spectacle occurred at this tasting, held under the umbrella of the Conseil Interprofessionnel des Vins du Roussillon. Now living considerably nearer than I did in 2001, I buzzed down in the car to be greeted by friendly smiles, crisp white linen, innumerable smartly presented winemakers with their wines and a rather civilised lunch. Now that's what I call progress.

Over the next few weeks I will finally publish my notes from this tasting, a mere seven months after the event. Such delay does not dull the mind, however, as there were some very interesting, stimulating wines here, showing plenty of regional character as well as intrinsic quality. And I took plenty of notes, which always helps. I might not be able to revisit the region (obviously I'm now waiting for my first invitation to visit from the CIVR, five-star accommodation, all expenses paid, naturally), but I would happily revisit many of these wines.
