Chateau Pech Redon

Pech Redon was once home to one of the Languedoc's innovators and motivators, Jean Demolombe. He planted Mourvèdre and Viognier before anybody else, and was one of the first in the region to try ageing wine en barrique. In 1988, however, Demolombe passed away and the estate came to Christophe Bousquet, who now runs it with the help of his father Jean-Claude, once a member of the St Saturnin co-operative.

Bousquet produces both white and red Coteaux du Languedoc La Clape. The best wines are the L'Epervier bottlings. The red, a blend of Syrah, Grenache and Carignan, sees some time in oak. The white, a blend of Grenache Blanc and Bourboulenc, is a weighty wine without any oak influence. There are also some vin de pays wines produced, using Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon and Alicante. 2002

Chateau Pech Redon Coteaux du Languedoc La Clape L'Epervier Blanc 2002: This wine has a pale golden colour. Fresh yet delicate aromas of lemons, thyme and even a little salty aniseed on the nose. On the palate, it has medium weight, a bit of grip and flavours that mirror the nose. There's a fresh acidity and herby character too. A good, strong, dry finish. 15.5/20 (November 2003) Label

1999

Chateau Pech Redon Coteaux du Languedoc La Clape L'Epervier Rouge 1999: A lovely, deeply coloured, red-black wine. Great character on the nose, with aromas of dark, tarry berry fruits and roasted herbs, with a sweet, charcoal and cherry-scented edge. Full, generous, savoury flavours of fruit, herb and stone. There's a rich creamy texture on the midpalate, backed up by a firm, tannic, grippy structure. Absolutely delicious. 16.5/20 (November 2003) Label
