Domaine Alquier

Although it is Gilbert Alquier's name that is to be found on the bottles from this domaine, it is now run by his sons Jean-Michel and Frederic, ever since Gilbert's death in 1989. Gilbert himself had taken over the running of the estate from his own father, who had established the estate with the planting of Grenache at the domaine in 1874. Jean-Michel and Frederic own a portion of vines apiece, but it is the former that exercises his skill in the winery.

There are both red and white wines produced here, with Les Bastides being the top red cuvee, made from a 5 hectare plot, and aged in oak, of which one third is new each year. In addition there is a basic red Faugères which is a superb example of what can be expected from the appellation. There are also whites here, dominated by the Rhone varieties of Marsanne, Rousanne, Viognier and Grenache Blanc. These are barrel fermented and produce a wine very much in the Hermitage style. 1998

Domaine Alquier Faugères 1998: This is the Alquier's basic cuvée, predominantly Grenache. An earthiness to the appearance suggesting early maturity, and moderate intensity, but still packed with colour. A lovely nose of very ripe, smoky Grenache fruit, with notes of raspberry, black cherry, rosemary and black pepper. Full bodied and very masculine on the palate, with plenty of ripe, meaty tannins and firm acidity behind the black cherry fruit. Good texture too, before a firm, tannic finish. Drinking now, but will happily stay in the cellar for three or four years more too. 16.5/20 (April 2004) Label
