Speri
The Speri family has a considerable history in the production of Amarone and similar wines, family members having begun the bottling and selling of their wines in 1874. Today the firm is run by Carlo Speri, the youngest of four brothers, who oversees a large number of nephews and cousins in the business. The fruit is sourced from Speri's own vineyards, which total 60 hectares, spread in several locations across the Valpolicella region.
The wines produced can be excellent. The Amarone can be an intense, rich, muscular wine. There is a basic Recioto, as well as the excellent Recioto della Valpolicella Classico cru 'La Roggia'.There are also several bottlings of Valpolicella, one Classico, one Classico Superiore and one cru Sant' Urbano. Speri - Tasting Notes
Speri Amarone della Valpolicella Classico 1997: Good deep
colour. Enticing nose, with freshly roasted fruits, chocolate and spice.
Impressive, mouthfilling texture, very rich and structured. Plenty of
flavour. Such a rich presence and structure carries the 14.8% alcohol
well. Tasted at Charlie Parker's.
16.5/20 (March 2003)

Speri Recioto della Valpolicella Classico La Roggia 1995: A dark, opaque red-black wine. Great depth on the nose, which
has masses of port-like, roasted blackberry and blueberry fruits, with hickory
and toast. The alcohol has a presence on the nose, so it is a surprise that the
label declares it to be only 13%. Rich and mouthfilling, with wonderful texture,
and plenty of spicy berry fruits. Its richness is kept in check by some healthy
acidity. A low level of ripe tannins. Delicious, drinking now. 17/20 (March
2003)
