Le Pupille

There are a number of quality-minded producers hidden away in the coastal regions of Tuscany, of which one of the best is Le Pupille. The coastal regions include, from north to south, Costa degli Etruschi, Montescudaio, Bolgheri, Val di Cornia, Massa Marittima and Scansano - Le Pupille is located in the latter, which is the longest established. Morellino is the local name for Sangiovese. The estate is owned by Elisabetta Geppetti. The wines have been made under a number of well known consultants, including Ricardo Cottarella, but most recently it is Christian le Sommer who advises - when he isn't too busy at Châteaux Lafite and Latour, where he is also employed.

The wines include a delicious, approachable Morellino di Scansano, as well as a Morellino di Scansano Riserva, the cru Poggio Valente and Saffredi, a Cabernet Merlot blend, which did much to put this estate on the map. (10/2/03)

2006

Le Pupille Morellino di Scansano 2006: This wine exhibits some bright black cherry fruit on the nose, presented in a vivacious, open, simple but certainly attractive style. There is perhaps a little note of herb and butter alongside it all. On the palate there is a wealth of fruit, a touch confected but quite joyous in character, herby and unpretentious. There are good, charcoal-firm tannins too. Nice appeal here, and ready for drinking. From a Liberty Wines tasting. 16+/20 (February 2008)

2000

Le Pupille Morellino di Scansano 2000: A richly coloured, vibrant, garnet red hue. There is lovely fruit on the nose, full of dark cherries, blackberries, plums and red fruits. Medium bodied on the palate, and nicely textured although not luscious. Behind this approachable exterior there is a firm extract, and typical acidity. Rounded cherry fruit with a layer of oak, and a savoury twist on the finish. Easy drinking and good value. 15.5/20 (February 2003) Label
