Prunotto

This long established family business is now controlled by Antinori, another well known family firm based in Tuscany. During the last two decades Antinori has expanded considerably, purchasing estates within and outside of Tuscany (and Italy), and Prunotto is just one of many acquisitions. The estate, led by old hand Beppe Colla (who took over the running of the estate from Alfredo Prunotto), had a good reputation as a commerciante (vinifying purchased grapes, akin to a Burgundy négociant). Antinori continued these contracts, but in addition began purchasing vineyards for supply of fruit, and introduced the use of small barriques for ageing (and a few other modernisations), something not favoured by Colla.

The wine portfolio includes several Barolos, Bussia and Cannubi, as well as Barberesco Montestefano, and lesser wines such as Barbera d'Alba Pian Romualdo, Nebbiolo d'Alba Occheti di Monteu and Barbera d'Asti Fiulot. The wines have remained absolutely classic and dependable, something that should continue under the auspices of Albiera Antinori, eldest daughter to Piero Antinori, and Danilo Droca, winemaker and one time understudy to Beppe Colla. 2000

Prunotto Barbera d'Asti Fiulot (Piedmont) 2000: A deep, red purple colour to this youthful wine. A lovely nose, dense and rich, with cherry fruit. In the background there is the barest, yet unmistakeable, hint of cork taint. Warm, rich and creamily textured on the palate. Lots of ripe, chewy tannins, which provide some lovely structure and grip. Low acidity. Tannic, grippy finish. This is a lovely wine. Unfortunately with a little time the cork taint takes over the nose, and becomes quite apparent on the palate also. A great shame as I think I would have otherwise rated this wine as good, if not very good. No score. (June 2003) Label
