Poliziano

Federico Carletti, assisted by oenologist Carlo Ferrini, is one of the leading producers of Montepulciano. The Carletti family purchased the Poliziano estate in 1961, but it is Federico who has brought the estate to the forefront of the regions' producers during the last two decades. The high level of quality is due, in part at least, to tireless attention to detail, as well as a certain degree of experimentation, in both cantina and vineyard. Such innovations include nurturing preferred clones of Sangiovese, early extraction of colour during the fermentation to avoid excessive tannin levels and even limited use of French oak.

The range of wines are led by a superlative Vino Nobile di Montepulciano cru Asinone, which is 100% Sangiovese, and produced only in the better years in order to maintain the quality of the straight Vino Nobile di Montepulciano. There is also a super-Tuscan Le Stanze a blend of the usual French varieties, and a simple Rosso di Montepulciano. (20/1/03)

2006

Poliziano Rosso di Montalcino 2006: From one of Vino Nobile's leading producers, this Sangiovese comes from a 20 hectare vineyard near Montepulciano. It has some rather lean, stony-feral fruit on the nose. The palate shows a little more richness, with lots of grip underneath. There is ripe tannin, moderate concentration and a nice tannic grip at the end. Good wine. From an Enotria tasting. 15.5+/20 (February 2009)

2003

Poliziano Rosso di Montalcino 2003: A fairly deep, oxblood-tinged hue. Bright, aromatic, smoky cherry fruit on the nose, with a little herby, leafy element to it. Fresh, medium bodied style on the palate, with a nice seamless texture. Good tannins give some grip through the midpalate and finish, and there is surprisingly crisp acidity bearing in mind the hot vintage. Fresh, red and black fruit character, leading to a lovely, sappy-savoury finish. Very good. 16.5/20 (September 2005)

2001

Poliziano Rosso di Montepulciano 2001: In the glass this wine is a dense, red-black hue. Fresh, vibrant, cherry and black fruit aromas on the nose. Awkward on the palate at first, but with some time it comes together to make a rounded, integrated impression. Plenty of sour-cherry fruit with a savoury, mouth-watering edge. Nice tannic structure and typically firm acidity. Good weight. 16.5+/20 (September 2003) Label

2000

Poliziano Rosso di Montepulciano 2000: Synthetic closure, and beneath a youthful purple-red colour. Lots summer fruits on the nose, with a touch of smoky oak. Nice texture on entry, although it seems leaner on the endpalate, as some spicy tannins come into play. Moderate, balanced but very fresh acidity, and a fair quantity of tartrate crystals. Clearly designed for consumption in its vibrant youth, although those tannins would benefit from up to a year in the cellar. 16/20 (January 2003) Label

1999

Poliziano Vino Nobile di Montepulciano 'Asinone' 1999: An attractive, deep, red-purple colour. A lovely nose, full of dark chocolate-coated black fruits. The palate is divine - full of grip, with firm, structural tannins and great acidity. It's intense, serious, mouth filling and savoury, and has wonderful depth of flavour, with black fruits, spice and pepper. Tremendous stuff. 18+/20 (January 2003) Label

1997

Poliziano Vino Nobile di Montepulciano 'Asinone' 1997: A good and fairly deep purple hue. Delightful nose, full of classic c Sangiovese aromas of plum, black cherry and rose-petal tobacco, as well as quality, tanned leather. Medium bodied on the palate, with superb, pure black cherry fruit again, with a sweet, oak-derived toffee and chocolate edge. Fine, dry tannins which are prominent towards the finish, although this doesn't spoil the experience. Typically prominent, savoury and mouth-watering razor sharp acidity, so it works well with food. 18/20 (February 2002)
