La Spinetta

La Spinetta is located in Castagnoe Lanze, and is run by Giorgi Rivetti. The estate has developed a fine reputation outside of the classic northern Italian regions of Barolo and Barbaresco.

La Spinetta's most significant wine is Pin, a blend of 50% Nebbiolo with 25% each of Barbera and Cabernet Sauvignon. The wine is produced under the Monferrato Rosso DOC (there is a Monferrato Bianco DOC also), a catch-all classification designed to bring the many blends made by the local producers under one umbrella. Both the red and white DOCs permit a wide range of varieties for blending. The Monferrato Bianco DOC even permits the use of red grapes vinified as white.

La Spinetta also produce Barbaresco cuvées Vigna Gallina and Vigneto Valeirano, a Chardonnay Lidia and a Moscato d'Asti Bricco Quaglia. (29/9/03)

1999

La Spinetta Monferrato Rosso 'Pin' 1999: My first taste of this vintage, although I have tasted the 1998 a few times now. Even though this has ten years under its belt now, this still has a remarkably dense, red purple hue, cut through with mature mahogany tones, although they are well hidden. A very dark wine, out to a thin raspberry-oxblood rim. Rich and sweet on the nose, meaty and savoury, dusty but not dry. Traces of chalky minerals, with plum and damson fruit laced with thyme. Poised but creamy on the palate, substantial but not over the top. Fine, dry, savoury and nicely textured, with a fine background of ripe, tightly defined, velvety tannins. Not an incredibly long finish, but very clean and bright all the same. I like the definition and style here a touch more than the 1998 I think. From my 1999 vintage Ten Years On tasting. 18+/20 (December 2009)

1998

La Spinetta Monferrato Rosso 'Pin' 1998: A very dark wine. Decanted for two hours. Gorgeous nose; black cherry and blueberry jam, with black peppercorns and sweet, honey roasted meats. The palate is full, with plenty of mouth-filling texture. Opulent, but underpinned by firm, slightly bitter, grippy tannins which form a core within the svelte mouthfeel. Beautifully balanced, with fine toasted fruit. Lovely with game. Will only improve, over five years at least. A Christmas Wine. 18+/20 (December 2004)

La Spinetta Monferrato Rosso 'Pin' 1998: A dark, glossy, dark red wine. A great nose, somewhat international in style, led by toasted oak, and followed by kirsch, chocolate and coffee. Brilliant texture on entry, mouth-filling and creamy, but with plenty of fine, firm tannins in the background. Flavours of white chocolate, black cherries and raspberries. Medium bodied. Tannic finish, great length. This is brilliant stuff. 18+/20 (September 2003) Label
