Tommaso Bussola
Tommaso Bussola is clearly one of the leaders of the Amarone DOC. Not originally from a noted winemaking family, Bussola purchased his winery and vineyards in the early 1990s, having learnt something of the winemaking business from his uncle, Guiseppe, a local grower. Under his direction his estate has gone from strength to strength, and turns out a selection of impressive wines.
Bussola produces two ranges of wines, each comprising a Valpolicella Classico Superiore, an Amarone della Valpolicella Classico and a Recioto della Valpolicella Classico. The 'BG' (Bussola Guiseppe, after his uncle) range of wines are produced with cost in mind, having less exposure to oak and less age. The 'TB' (Tommaso Bussola) range are where anything goes, hang the cost. In addition to his other 'TB' wines there is another the Amarone Vigneto Alto, the top wine in this range. (26/5/03)

Tommaso Bussola - Tasting Notes
Tommaso Bussola Amarone della Valpoicella Classico BG 2000: Ripe,
macerated fruit, with tangible depth. Full, cherry fruit, creamy style. Very
powerful, firm, dominating tannins. Good acidity. Sweet, burnt cherry finish.
Needs 5-6 years. Should be very good though. 16.5+/20

Tommaso Bussola Amarone della Valpolicella Classico 'TB' 1997: Tommaso Bussola
designates his wines as BG and TB, the latter being the finer. This wine has a
lovely, dark colour, a dense and glossy hue, although not inky or black. It
doesn't prepare you for the nose, which is dense, powerful and impressive.
Aromas of blackberries and chocolate fill the room, and closer examination
reveals notes of black pepper and pickling spices. The palate is luscious and
sweetly textured, from entry right through to the finish. Despite it's full
body, ripe, spicy tannins, power and grip it has delightful balance. There are
piles of fruit, with notes of coffee grounds and more of those spices. It
finished very well, with tremendous length. A wonderful melding of elegance
and power. 18.5+/20 (May 2003)
