Brunelli
The Brunelli family enjoyed an excellent reputation in Tuscany, although it was not always for their wines. Gianni's father had once been a winemaker, but had moved into the restaurant business, having sold the family estate. Their restaurant, Osteria Le Logge, in Siena, was very successful. Nevertheless Gianni purchased back the family estate in 1988, with further expansion in 1996. Gianni continues in the restaurant as a full time chef, also making the wine, with the help of oenologist Paolo Vagaggini. Although the winemaking approach is traditional, using large Slavonian oak botti, the wines are rich, ripe, fruity, approachable and quite modern.
The wines include a very good Brunello, aged in Slavonian oak as above. Some barrique ageing, and blending with Merlot, is employed to produce his Sant' Antimo Rosso. (6/1/03)

Brunelli - Tasting Notes
Brunelli Brunello di Montalcino 1997:
A lovely garnet red colour with the intensity of youth. Crushed berry
fruits on the nose, with smoke and charcoal evidence of oak maturation, and some
aromatic, rose petal notes. Ripe, full-bodied and with a rich edge to a pleasing
texture in the mouth. Nice berry fruit flavours. Acidity is nicely balanced and not as prominent as many
other Brunellos. Ripe tannins provide some grip and softly coat the mouth on the
finish. A modern, approachable style. 16.5/20 (January 2003)
