Enzo Boglietti
The driving force behind this estate is Enzo Boglietti, although it is not a single-handed affair. He is aided by both brother and father, who tend the vines, whilst Enzo oversees processes in the cantine. A new producer on the Barolo scene, only establishing a presence in the early 1990s, Enzo Boglietti produces a stylish range of wines. As one might expect, he is not afraid to embrace new techniques, including the use of high-toast small barrique where he deems it appropriate.
His wines include three Barolo Crus, Case Nere, Fossati and Brunate. Some might argue, however, that his best wine is Buio, a blend of Nebbiolo and Barbera aged in the aforementioned French barrique. Alternatively, one might put forward a case for his Barbera d'Alba Vigna dei Romana, pointing out that this is one of Piedmont's greatest examples of Barbera. Otherwise, there are also good value wines available in the form of standard Barbera d'Alba and Dolcetto d'Alba cuvées. (23/6/03)

Enzo Boglietti - Tasting Notes
Enzo Boglietti Dolcetto d'Alba Tiglineri 2003: Sweet, leafy, black
cherry fruit. Plump palate, with a soft ripeness, moderate acidity and a gentle
tannic grip. Nice sweet fruit on the palate. This is good, with a more serious
note than would be found in many Dolcettos. It needs 1-2 years to open out.
15.5+/20 (May 2005)

Enzo Boglietti Barbera d'Alba 2001: This wine is a vibrant red hue,
although slightly less dense and less purple than last week's Dolcetto. A
delightful nose, with polished oak overlaid with black cherries, other black
fruits, and a hint of liquorice. On the palate is where this wine really
impresses though, with a full, rounded mouthfeel the first sensation. There are
ripe, elegant tannins which provide structure but don't dominate, together with
low acidity, plenty of fruit and a creamy, impressive texture. This is a
complete and harmonious wine, which lingers with fruit and grip on the finish.
Delicious stuff. 17+/20 (June 2003)

Enzo Boglietti Dolcetto d'Alba Tiglineri 2001: What a fantastic colour in the
glass - a deep, plush purple hue, a dark and youthful looking wine. With such a
young wine it takes a little time to open out in the glass, initially offering
just aromas of charred, smouldering oak, but it soon begins to reveal layers
of dense cherry and raspberry fruit as well as a touch of liquorice. Creamy,
textured and mouthfilling on the palate, with plenty of extract, grip and
tannin. This wine, produced from 60 year old vines, is a serious, classy example of Dolcetto. Piles of cherry fruit complete the picture.
Brilliant, structured, crowd-pleasing stuff, that has the structure to improve
in the cellar for three to four years. 17+/20 (June 2003)

Enzo Boglietti Barolo Case Nere 1997: This wine has a lovely, deep
colour for Nebbiolo, still with a youthful appearance even at six years of age.
The nose has a beautiful melding together of gently baked fruit, with an
intense, heady, exotic perfume, port-like spice and some barrique-derived notes
of toffee and caramel. Full, rich and balanced on the palate. Plenty of
integrated structure and sweet-savoury fruit. Firm, and a powerful length. This
is brilliant Barolo. 18+/20 (September 2003)
