Cave Vinicole de Turckheim
Looking across the whole of France I think it is possible to count the reliable cooperatives, ie. those that consistently produce reliable, tasty and good value wines, without running out of fingers. You might not even need more than one hand. La Chablisienne (Burgundy), Cave de Tain l'Hermitage (Rhône) and Les Producteurs de Mont Tauch (the South) are three that spring to mind. In Alsace, however, we have the Cave Vinicole de Turckheim, a cooperative of over 200 members with holdings totalling over 300 hectares. This includes vines in the Grands Crus Brand, Hengst, Sommerberg, Ollwiller, Sporen, Schoenenbourg and Wineck-Schlossberg.
Although the basic cuvees win praise, it is naturally the Grand Cru wines that attract most attention, particularly as good value wines. I have found that Pinot Gris and Gewurztraminer are the most reliable varieties, with both generic and Grand Cru wines impressive in the past. (13/11/01)

Cave Vinicole de Turckheim - Tasting Notes
Cave Vinicole de Turckheim Cuvée Réserve Tokay Pinot
Gris 2000: This has an impressively deep and
rich colour, and has an expressive nose, full of honey,
bacon, spice and tropical fruits. The palate is full
bodied and dripping with clean fruit, spice and pepper,
cut through with brilliant acidity. A honeyed edge to the
texture lends a note of opulence. On the finish a
suggestion of bitter stringency is the only gripe,
although this is picking on a very minor point. This is
lovely wine, and excellent value for money.

Cave Vinicole
de Turckheim Cuvée Réserve Muscat 1998: This
is a pale wine, and it's a little shy on the nose. There
are some fairly typical orange and tangerine aromas which
mark this as Muscat, with fresh, floral notes as well.
The palate is soft with low acidity, another feature of
Muscat. It has clean flavour, with fresh citrus fruit
flavours underpinning floral and blossom nuances.
Reasonably full in body, this wine disappoints somewhat,
as it lacks both character and depth of flavour.
